Sakili’s music embodies the rich history of Rodrigues Island, seamlessly merging European and African influences. Mazurka, waltz, polka, and schottische all intertwine with the traditional African sega drumming rhythms. This fusion reflects the cultural blend of the island’s past, while modern influences from globalization also creep into some of their songs, bringing elements of the Western world and contemporary themes.
Creole sega is a sensual music and dance form, with deep African roots. Originally, it served as a form of cultural resistance by slaves against colonial oppression, but over time, it evolved into a ritual deeply ingrained in tradition and now stands as an integral part of life. Sega drumming, the hallmark of this vibrant genre, is a dynamic blend of percussion, song, and social significance.
Trio Sakili features three prominent ambassadors of Rodrigues sega: Vallen Pierre Louis, a highly regarded banjoist on the island; Francis Prosper, from one of Rodrigues’ most influential musical families, is celebrated as the best traditional percussionist and lends his powerful voice to the group. Rounding out the trio is Ricardo Legentile on accordion, the island’s signature melodic instrument, passed down through generations in his family. His mother, Yolande Legentile, is one of the revered Mareshals of Sega in Rodrigues.
